The global paper industry is undergoing a fundamental raw material transformation—one that challenges its centuries‑old dependence on wood pulp. As forest resources grow strained, environmental regulations tighten, and brands commit to carbon neutrality, non‑wood fibers are moving decisively from the margins to center stage. Bamboo, bagasse, wheat straw, rice straw, cotton stalks, and other agricultural residues are redefining what “sustainable paper” truly means—not as a niche alternative, but as a mainstream solution for specialty paper.
A Shift That Can No Longer Be Ignored
The industry’s reliance on virgin wood fiber is now challenged from multiple directions. Consumer awareness of deforestation, stricter forestry certifications, and rising wood pulp costs have revived interest in alternative fibers. At the same time, the vast quantities of agricultural waste generated globally—much of it burned or left to decompose—represent an enormous untapped resource. Non‑wood fibers now account for a growing share of papermaking raw materials, with Asia‑Pacific and European markets leading adoption. Driven by sustainability regulations and market preference for Eco‑friendly products, more manufacturers are integrating non‑wood fibers into production lines. Packaging and specialty paper are the primary beneficiaries—these segments demand high performance and strong environmental credentials, and non‑wood fibers deliver both. For converters and brand owners, the question is no longer whether to explore non‑wood options, but how to implement them effectively without compromising quality or cost.
Bamboo Pulp: Where Performance Meets Sustainability
Among non‑wood fiber sources, bamboo pulp stands out as the most compelling all‑rounder. Bamboo is one of the fastest‑growing plants, reaching maturity in three to five years—far quicker than most trees. It regenerates after harvesting without replanting, requires minimal water and no chemical fertilizers, and grows on marginal land unsuited for food crops. These characteristics give bamboo pulp a clear environmental advantage.
But bamboo pulp’s appeal extends beyond its green credentials—it delivers genuine performance that rivals traditional wood pulps. Bamboo fibers are naturally long and slender, comparable to softwood fibers, enabling higher tensile strength, greater folding endurance, and superior tear resistance. Papers made from bamboo pulp exhibit excellent formation, good opacity, and a smooth surface that responds well to coating and printing. Choosing bamboo pulp does not mean sacrificing quality—quite the opposite. It offers a rare combination of environmental responsibility and mechanical robustness, making it ideal for premium packaging, luxury boxes, and high‑end printing where both aesthetics and durability matter.
Bagasse and Other Agricultural Residues: Turning Waste into Value
Bagasse—the fibrous byproduct of sugarcane processing—is another vital non‑wood fiber source. Traditionally burned or discarded, bagasse is now recognized as a premium papermaking raw material. Its fibers, slightly shorter than bamboo, still produce paper with good strength, excellent bulk, and a natural off‑white color that requires less bleaching. Research shows that bagasse paper outperforms wheat straw paper in tensile strength, burst index, and folding endurance, making it a cost‑effective option for packaging and industrial applications.
Beyond bagasse, other residues such as wheat straw, rice straw, and cotton stalks are also gaining attention. These materials are abundant, and their use reduces the environmental burden of field burning while providing farmers with extra income. Converting agricultural waste into high‑value paper cuts carbon emissions, reduces pressure on forests, and embodies the circular economy. For specialty paper manufacturers, the diversity of non‑wood fibers offers flexibility to tailor pulp blends for specific end‑uses—whether to maximize strength, optimize printability, or enhance tactile feel.
Tonli Customization: A Pioneer in Non‑Wood Fiber Technology
Tonli Customization’s exploration of non‑wood fibers began long before the trend gained mainstream attention. The company recognized early that sustainable sourcing would become a competitive differentiator and invested heavily in R&D to master alternative pulps. The result is the Colored Cardboard Series, manufactured with a proprietary blend of 60% non‑wood fiber and 40% wood fiber—a balanced formulation that optimizes both environmental performance and physical properties.
The production process uses virgin pulp fiber dyeing, ensuring uniform color saturation and vibrancy throughout the sheet. Unlike surface‑coated papers that carry pigment only on the top layer, Tonli’s core-dyeing technology penetrates every fiber, so folded edges reveal no white core—a common problem with conventional colored papers. This technology also delivers exceptional color fastness, maintaining richness even under prolonged light exposure or repeated handling. The finished product offers substantial hand feel, high stiffness, outstanding folding endurance, and batch‑to‑batch consistency. These attributes stem from decades of accumulated expertise and continuous refinement of blending ratios, drying profiles, and coating formulations.
More importantly, Tonli has not confined non‑wood fibers to a single product line. From black cardstock to colored art boards, from printing art paper to Eco‑friendly specialty paper, non‑wood fiber technology spans the entire portfolio. Through proprietary patents and in‑house formulation expertise, Tonli ensures each grade uses the optimal fiber mix for its intended application—whether a rigid luxury box, a flexible carrier tape, or a highly printable art sheet. This holistic approach gives customers confidence that they can specify non‑wood fibers without compromising the performance their projects demand.
Beyond Environmental Benefits
The value of non‑wood fibers extends far beyond the “Eco‑friendly” label. For brands and converters, adopting non‑wood fiber paper offers strategic advantages. First, it offers differentiated sustainability storytelling—when consumers scrutinize carbon footprints and raw material origins, non‑wood sourcing is a powerful, authentic brand narrative. Second, it creates more resilient supply chains. Agricultural residues and fast‑growing bamboo are not constrained by long timber rotation cycles, nor are they as vulnerable to geopolitical disruptions that affect wood pulp markets. This diversification reduces risk and improves price stability. Third, it offers regulatory foresight. Markets like the EU are continuously raising environmental standards for packaging, mandating recycled content, restricting chemicals, and demanding full life‑cycle assessments. Early adoption of non‑wood fibers is effective risk mitigation, positioning brands ahead of compliance curves.
Moreover, non‑wood fibers often require less chemical pulping and bleaching than wood fibers, reducing the overall environmental footprint. Combined with responsible sourcing and efficient water use, non‑wood fiber papers can meet the highest sustainability benchmarks while still delivering the tactile and visual qualities luxury packaging demands.
Conclusion
Does non‑wood fiber represent the future of specialty paper? The answer is becoming increasingly clear. When sustainability is no longer optional, when more international brands incorporate non‑wood fibers into their specifications, and when leading manufacturers prove performance need not be sacrificed—this is no longer a question of “whether,” but of “how fast.”
With its 60% non‑wood fiber formulations, proprietary core‑dyeing technologies, and over two decades of specialty paper experience, Tonli Customization stands at the forefront of this transformation. The company is not just following a trend; it is helping to set the standard for what sustainable specialty paper can achieve. Choosing non‑wood fibers is not just choosing sustainability—it is choosing the future.

In premium packaging and print finishing, edge whitening — commonly known as crack on fold after folding, die-cutting, or scoring — has long been a persistent quality issue for brands. What appears to be a minor visual flaw is in fact a fundamental difference in dyeing technology: whether color is built into the fibers or applied only to the paper surface. Pulp-dyed paper and surface-coated paper represent two entirely different coloring logics that define a paper’s performance ceiling and quality boundaries during converting. Understanding this difference allows decision-makers to move beyond superficial unit-price comparisons and solve the long-standing problems of fold cracking and edge whitening at the source.
Process Fundamentals: Color Inside the Fiber vs. Color on the Surface
At the core of pulp dyeing is fiber-level through-coloration. Dyes are added directly to the pulp suspension during the beating stage, where dye molecules bond with cellulose fibers through hydrogen bonds and complete uniform coloring before the sheet is formed. The resulting color runs through the entire sheet thickness — surface, core, and back are identical — which is why it is also called through-dyed paper or through-dyed cardboard. This is coloring from the inside out: color becomes an inherent property of the material itself.
Surface-coated dyeing, by contrast, is surface layer deposition. A pigment-containing coating is applied to an already formed white paper base, and colorants are bonded to the surface by film-forming binders. Color exists only in the few-micron coating layer, while the paper core remains native white. Its advantages include lower dye consumption, faster color changes, and lower cost, making it suitable for general printing applications with modest converting requirements.
The Root Cause of Crack on Fold: Coating Fracture and Exposed White Core
The mechanism behind fold cracking is straightforward. When surface-coated paper is folded or scored, the surface coating experiences tensile stress that causes micro-cracks or even delamination, exposing the white paper base underneath. This effect is especially noticeable on dark-colored boards. Higher grammage and sharper fold angles make the problem worse. Beyond folding, die-cut edges and embossed sidewalls also show varying degrees of whitening, undermining the premium appearance of packaging.
Pulp-dyed paper eliminates this problem at its source. Since every individual fiber is colored throughout, any exposed fiber — whether from folding compression, cut edges or abrasion — remains the same color. There is simply no white core to reveal. Industry test data shows that after a 180-degree fold on black cardboard of the same grammage, surface-coated paper exhibits a color difference ΔE of over 4.2 at the fold line, with a clearly visible white edge to the naked eye. Through-dyed paper, by comparison, records a ΔE of only 0.8 at the fold, an almost undetectable difference. In terms of abrasion resistance, pulp-dyed paper delivers an average dry rub ΔE of 0.9, significantly better than the 2.7 typical of surface-coated paper, maintaining a clean appearance even with prolonged handling.
Industry Preference: Why Premium Packaging Favors Pulp Dyeing
The packaging industry is undergoing clear quality stratification. Standard e-commerce and industrial cartons prioritize cost, where surface coating dominates on price. But in premium food gift boxes, luxury packaging, branded shopping bags, and boutique hang tags, pulp-dyed through-color board is already the recognized quality standard. Two key factors drive this shift.
First is converting compatibility. Premium packaging routinely involves complex processes such as hot foil stamping, embossing, die-cutting, and multiple folds. Each additional converting step increases the risk of coating crack and delamination with surface-coated paper, while through-dyed paper retains consistent color regardless of processing, delivering far greater quality stability.
Second is consistent brand perception. From the front face seen on unboxing, to the cut edges when opening, to the details along fold lines, a uniform color experience across every viewing angle is foundational to premium brand identity, an experience surface-coated paper can never deliver.
Industry data shows that through-dyed colored cardboard already penetrates over 65% of China’s high-end cosmetics and premium food packaging sectors, with adoption continuing to rise.

Future Development Trends
In the future, pulp dyeing technology will advance along two main paths.
First is greener production, with high-efficiency dye recovery and membrane treatment systems further reducing wastewater load and balancing performance against environmental cost. Second is functional integration, adding grease resistance, moisture barrier, and antibacterial properties on top of through-coloration to create single-sheet solutions that combine coloring, protection, and structural performance.
For export brands, crack-on-fold performance is never merely an aesthetic detail — it directly defines product quality positioning and brand professionalism. Choosing pulp-dyed through-dyed paper means eliminating quality risks at the material level and building a premium packaging experience that holds up to scrutiny at every edge and every fold.
As global environmental regulations tighten and brand ESG compliance becomes standardized across industries, premium packaging evaluation no longer focuses solely on appearance and processing stability. Low-VOC and low-emission performance has become a mandatory entry standard for high-end export packaging.
Many overseas brands and printing factories overlook a critical hidden risk: conventional coated paper with chemical-based coatings retains volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These residual substances cause persistent workshop odors and air pollution, threaten workers’ physical health, and often fail EU REACH, PPWR, and domestic green printing inspections.
This leads to customs detention, supplier disqualification, and irreversible brand reputation losses. From the perspectives of compliance safety, production health, and brand value upgrading, this article explains the core advantages, production logic, and industry trends of low-VOC paper, providing professional and practical material selection guidance for global packaging buyers.
VOCs refer to harmful volatile organic residues generated during paper production and coating processes. Traditional specialty papers rely heavily on solvent-based paints and chemical additives for surface coating and functional modification, continuously releasing benzene and aldehyde substances during storage and processing. Long-term exposure to high-VOC paper pollutes indoor air, irritates the respiratory system, and endangers workers’ occupational health. In addition, residual VOCs may migrate to packaged goods such as food, cosmetics, and luxury products, failing the safety requirements of premium consumer goods.
Furthermore, global VOC emission limits have been significantly tightened in 2026. Traditional high-emission paper can no longer meet cross-border compliance standards, becoming a major barrier for export businesses.
Core Low-VOC Production Technologies: Eliminate Emissions at the Source
Tonli low-VOC specialty paper adopts two core green production processes to completely eliminate harmful residues from raw materials and production links, standing out from traditional chemically coated paper.
The first is chemical-free coating technology. Selected product lines adopt pure fiber-forming structures without solvent-based coatings, fluorescent brighteners, or toxic chemical additives, achieving zero VOC residues and inherent cleanliness and safety.
The second is water-based eco-coating technology. Replacing traditional organic solvents with pure water as the dispersion medium and adopting low-VOC food-grade functional additives, the coating produces almost no volatile substances during curing. The finished paper maintains excellent waterproof, oil-proof, and wear-resistant performance while achieving ultra-low VOC emissions.
The entire production process eliminates high-pollution chemical materials, requiring no additional deodorization or purification treatment. It effectively reduces factory environmental governance costs and realizes full-chain low emission during production, storage and application, suitable for dust-free workshops, food packaging, maternal and infant products, high-end beauty and other high-cleanliness scenarios.

In the jewelry sector, packaging is never a mere container for products — it is the primary vehicle for value communication and ritual construction.
A piece of jewelry’s perceived value and pricing begin to take shape the moment a consumer’s fingertips touch the box. Many jewelry brands focus all their design efforts on the outer box aesthetic, yet overlook the functionality and texture of inner liner papers. Ordinary paper with high sulfur or acid content causes silver jewelry to tarnish, and rough surfaces scratch gemstones, ultimately leading to after-sales complaints and brand reputation damage.
For jewelry brands, selecting the right packaging paper is essentially about finding the optimal balance between product protection, sensory experience, and brand premium — which is the core reference value of this guide.
Outer Box Papers: Building Instant Premium Visual Recognition
Outer box paper defines shelf differentiation and the first impression of unboxing, with core priorities of low reflectivity, premium feel, and conversion compatibility. Three main options dominate the premium segment.
Soft-touch coated paper is the top choice for contemporary light-luxury jewelry brands. Its micro-velvety matte coating delivers a warm, delicate hand feel and resists fingerprint marks, presenting a low-glare frosted finish. Unlike standard glossy coated paper, which often appears cheap due to harsh reflections, soft-touch paper maintains a calm, premium visual performance under all lighting conditions. It also performs excellently with advanced finishing techniques such as hot foil stamping and debossing, accommodating precise brand logo and pattern execution.
Embossed art paper focuses on textural differentiation. Precision steel rollers create three-dimensional textures such as linen grain, leather grain, and silk patterns, conveying artisanal, vintage, and premium brand identity through the material itself without the need for complex printed graphics. It is particularly well suited for designer brands, vintage-style jewelry, and colored stone collections. High-density solid-core dyed board caters to minimalist aesthetics and men’s jewelry. Through-core dyeing technology delivers clean-cut edges free of white borders, and low-saturation shades such as deep black and charcoal gray deliver understated sophistication. Paired with minimalist foil-stamped logos, it achieves a restrained, high-end look.
Inner Box Liners: Hidden Details That Define Quality Ceilings
If the outer box drives visual attraction, the jewelry box liner directly impacts product protection and the detailed experience — the most overlooked yet reputation-critical element. Professional jewelry liner papers meet three mandatory standards that ordinary packaging papers cannot.
First is acid-free, sulfur-free chemical stability. This is the foundational requirement for jewelry liners. Sterling silver, gold, and copper jewelry will oxidize and lose luster after prolonged contact with sulfur-containing or acidic paper. Professional jewelry liner papers use a neutral pH formula (pH 7.0–8.5) with zero sulfur addition, preventing metal tarnish at the material source and keeping jewelry bright even during long-term storage.
Second is a low-friction, smooth surface. Highly polished precious metals and gemstone surfaces are extremely susceptible to micro-scratches. Professional liner papers feature a dense, uniform fiber structure with a smooth, impurity-free surface that will not scratch mirror finishes during wrapping or padding, preserving perfect jewelry condition.
Third is a continuous soft-touch experience. Thin soft-touch tissue liners deliver a gentle wrapping sensation when the box is opened, extending the unboxing ritual from the outer box to the product itself and reinforcing premium memory.
Core Business Value for Jewelry Brands
From a brand operations perspective, professional jewelry packaging paper delivers three layers of value.
Reduce after-sales losses
Acid-free, tarnish-resistant, and scratch-resistant properties significantly reduce returns and complaints caused by oxidation and abrasion, making it especially valuable for e-commerce and cross-border distribution.
Boosts product premium
A dual-layer textured packaging experience enhances consumers’ perceived product value; industry data shows premium packaging materials can lift jewelry’s perceived value by over 20%.
Strengthen brand identity
Consistent material and texture create an exclusive tactile brand memory, distinguishing brands from competitors using generic packaging.
Industry Landscape & Future Development Trends
The global jewelry packaging market was valued at approximately USD 1.35 billion in 2025, with paper and cardboard accounting for 37.9% — the largest packaging material segment. Three key shifts are reshaping the sector.
