C2S art paper should be used when both sides of the printed paper are important. It is featured in brochures with images on each page, presentation covers (two-sided), and packaging that exposes the interior when opened. Two coated faces provide the designer with greater freedom.
However, not all C2S papers serve the same purpose. Common white grades can be used to reproduce photographs and graphics, while decorative versions make the paper's own finish the main feature. When choosing a C2S art paper supplier, it is important to understand this difference.
TONLI SPECIALTY PAPER also offers black pearl C2S paper, a decorative alternative to conventional coated paper. This guide covers the basics of C2S, where it is useful, and why choosing the right grade matters.
C2S stands for “coated two sides,” meaning both surfaces of the paper are coated. The coating may affect the smoothness, reflectivity, and the way ink lies on the paper's surface. The finish can be glossy, matte, or decorative, depending on the grade. C2S is about where the coat is being placed, not its color or stiffness.
Although both are C2S papers, a white-coated sheet used for detailed imagery cannot always replace black pearlescent paper. Each type may require different artwork to achieve the desired visual effect.
C1S paper is coated on one side. This fits a label or carton with an inside that's hidden. This is when a piece opens, flips over, or is viewed from multiple angles, where C2S becomes more relevant.

The second coated face does not provide much advantage when it is to be permanently concealed.
Important information may be on both sides of a folded leaflet. A similar surface treatment allows the designer to design color, pictures, and typography throughout the piece and not as an afterthought to the front. It is not a promise of absolute uniformity of print—paper, press, and ink parameters also affect printing.
The inside edge of a sleeve is exposed when the sleeve is pulled out of the case, and the inside of a presentation folder is exposed when the folder is opened. Opinion on those short snapshots can be more significant than the flat unvarying sample.
Make a full-size mock-up prior to approving artwork and view it in the order a customer may use it. This shows you where the coating is important.
White C2S paper provides a light background for conventional printed images. A black pearlescent sheet has a dark background. Artwork created for white paper should not be reused without adjustments because the inks may lose contrast on the darker surface. In some designs, using fewer printed elements and leaving parts of the surface exposed can create an effective result.
If one side of a brochure is graphically oriented and the other side is photographic, coated white stock can help to maintain a consistent look throughout the brochure. Use of decorative C2S may be more suitable for cover or divider than on all leaves.
The back of an invitation can be used for venue information, a program, or a small graphic. Black pearl paper is another alternative: print on top of a simple title or motif. When writing programs for events, think about the appearance of the piece in the day as well as at night.
Broad areas of the reverse surface may be exposed by a lift-off lid or a flip-top display box. Those areas can be treated with a sense of completion by using double-sided paper.
However, paper alone is not enough to make a box form—the fold pattern and constructions must still be appropriate for the product, and the supporting board must also be suitable.
Notebook covers, presentation dividers, and hang tags serve different purposes from brochures. A tag can spin on its attachment, while an insert can be removed and put back multiple times. Both sides may be visible, and the paper grade should suit the intended use and handling requirements.
TONLI SPECIALTY PAPER offers double-sided black pearl C2S paper produced by applying pearlescent coating materials to wood-pulp paper. According to the product information, it has symmetrical coatings designed to provide a consistent decorative appearance on both sides. This is a decorative option within the broader category of C2S papers, which includes conventional gloss and matte grades.
For a cover that features large white photos, you might want to use a traditional white paper. Alternatively, a small metallic title can be provided on a black pearl cover, leaving most of the cover blank. This is determined by whether the image or the paper comes first in the design.
The product description lists customizable grammages of 120–300 gsm and sheet sizes of 787 × 1092 mm and 889 × 1194 mm. Availability should be confirmed against the specifications of the individual product.
Decorative paper can influence the overall appearance of a printed design. An opaque graphic can cover the shimmer of pearlescent stock, while leaving some areas unprinted may create a cleaner effect.
TONLI's black pearl series has been defined by screen printing, UV coating, hot stamping, embossing, and die-cutting processes.
Decide on finishing according to what needs emphasis. Use embossing for dimension and foil for small lettering to be readable on a black background. The combined effect of the printing, folding, and raised or stamped effect is to be depicted in a completed sample (not the artwork prior to conversion).
Tell the supplier what you plan to use the paper for and how the finished product will be printed and finished. If you need a decorative coating, confirm the exact grade and its specifications.

C2S art paper is not just a higher-quality version of one-sided paper. It is helpful when the backside is used for a printed product such as an illustrated brochure, package, or cover that opens to the reader.
The main question is whether the project requires printable white surfaces or a more decorative finish, such as black pearl paper. A C2S art paper supplier can help narrow down the material options, but the final choice should depend on the design and intended application.
